...but wish it was less refined, slower and more idiosyncratic? Then boy is this the car for you!
This is a suspected !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! fitted with a 1.8l BMC diesel. Supposedly described by an ex-experimental engineer as ‘one of their ideas that should never have been let out of the factory gates’. Bidding at £205 reserve not met...

This is the car we’ve all been waiting for.

Oh, you bastard. I’m trying to get rid of a car, not buy another...
(Nice find, just needs a turbo...)

i’d buy that for a dollar.

I do think a classic car plus a diesel engine is probably quite a good combo, but it’d have to be a modern turbo-diesel with a remap so it’ll actually rev half a damn.
After driving my dad’s Alfa 156 2.4 JTD I had a bit of an idea to remap one and put it in an Alfetta GTV. It made such a nice noise for a diesel, a lovely little 5-cylinder warble, I think it’d make a great compliment to a V6 GTV6.
Remapped it should make 210bhp and ~300lb-ft, and rev much happier than a standard TD engine :)

A turbo would definitely perk this thing up :) speaking of perk, a Perkins diesel would be good as well if you want a bit more vim...
How much did you put it up for in the end? I couldn’t access that E30 forum...

I do want an MGB GT, yes, and I even like this color. However, I don’t want a diesel car, especially an old, slow diesel. I would say this’s ripe for a swap, seeing it’s not an original motor anyway, but if it’s a factory prototype, it would be worth much more left as it is.
Thank you, but no thank you.

My thoughts on the matter too, just thought it was curious :)
Actually, so far I’d describe my daily driving experience of my 70bhp NA diesel Citroen BX as ‘surprisingly painless’. Overtaking’s rare, and I’m outpaced by damn near everything, but you don’t actually need any of that to get around.
Don’t get me wrong, I miss driving a car with a bit of oomph, but the little BX has its charms :)

Brownish diesel shooting brake? Oppo group buy?

I stuck it on there at £950, expecting someone to make me a lower offer, but got no response. I just dropped the price to £695. If I still don’t get any offers I’ll stick it on Ebay this w/e.

Good luck dude :) I’ll be keeping an eye on it.
Could even stick a cheeky bid in to try and bump up the price for you ;)

My thought - put a VW 2.0 R4 (or R5!) TDI in high tune in a base 924. Jump in weight is about 20kg, for a jump from 110hp/125hp to 188 (or 236 if you’re greedy and get the new Passat biturbo one) and much better torque.

Plus stellar fuel economy :) what an excellent idea
Only issue I can see with my Alfetta GTJTD idea is that the transaxle isn’t up to all that torque. Still, there’s a ~650bhp twin-turbo 24v Alfa GTV6 doing time attack somewhere, so there must be a way to beef up the components :)
From what I understand, the 924 axle is a good deal stronger...

Let me put it this way - it’s the shortest path to a true diesel sports car of which I’m aware, and VW/Audi interfaces being what they are probably scarcely requires a single part to be made, just sourced. End result - better performance across the board, good reliability, great sound, and almost inconceivable “sports car” mileage, probably nudging 40 in light driving. The only trick being that you’d pay more for the engine than the car, probably.

Thanks, I was wondering how many different IPs I can find to do that with ;)

I’d watch out, someone went to jail for that recently :S he found out he could log into eBay twice, so used one account to drive up the bidding on the other...

Oh, really? Any idea what he was charged with? Was he doing it on ebay motors auctions, or on the binding ones for other stuff?

I bet you there’s a crowd of Englishmen that are dying to get this.
(Read in a Northern British voice)
“Ohhh Nigel, there’s a factory diesel MGB. I get to spend even more time tinkering with it in my shed”
“Not if my bid triumphs yours”

Not a clue unfortunately, was one of those quick headlines that I skimmed past. Fraud maybe?
